    What Is Low And Ultra Low Carbon Austenitic Stainless Steel?

     

    In terms of Austenitic Stainless Steel, The 304L alloys must be a key one. In grade 304 stainless, the maximum carbon content is set at 0.08%, whereas grade 304L stainless steel has a maximum carbon content of 0.03%. The “L” in 304L can be interpreted as meaning extra-low carbon. Grade 304UL is a Ultra low carbon type of 304.

     

    304UL and 316UL have been developed to have C≦0.020% as a countermeasure against intergranular corrosion. They are Superior to 304L and 316L in intergranular corrosion resistance and assures further improved safety against intergranular corrosion.


    This minute difference of carbon content produces a slight, but marked, difference in the performances of the two alloys. In practice, both 304L and 304UL can be used for many of the same applications. The lower carbon content helps eliminate carbide precipitation during the welding process, which allows 304UL stainless steel to be used in the “as-welded” state, even in severe corrosive environments.

     

    304L Application: Companies often take advantage of 304L’s corrosion resistance for construction projects, It is used in building materials, heat resistant outdoors machines and parts with difficulty in heat treatment and chemical, coal and petroleum industries. Type 304L is also popular in beer brewing and wine making.
